Movies are dreams

The craft of screenwriting seems to be an infinite subject for books, posts, seminars. Advices everywhere, gurus at the corner of each lost dog on a parking lot. And indeed, some sort of science is finally slowly emerging of all this. What I’d like to highlight here is the most significant aspect of movies : their dream quality.

Movies are truth in the very measure that they are dreams inside a dream, making it, for a glimpse, the moments that we are most alive. Yes, the moments we are most ourselves are when we share, together, that absolute absence of personal will and action : being a spectator is being for a while the king of our universe. Paradox ? No. Less of us is always more of the world, and only then can we see beyond our limited point of views.

Structure ? Characters ? Plot ? Theme ? Good luck with them. Welcome to development hell. Hell is reality. Plausibility, efficience, meaning. Logic.

Dream is not only freedom and creativity, dream is wider and deeper intelligence, dream goes beyond limits, dream embraces light and darkness, past and future. Dream is the true aspect of the world we live in, that is to say, images, meaning and stories of our own mind.

If you are a screenwriter, dream is the only word that describes both your target, your craft, your motivation and the audience needs.

So let us dream ? No. Let us realize, in full consciousness that we were dreaming, without knowing it,  before the film began. Let us apprehend clearly what our lives are made of. Let us enter in the true and unique Storyland that life is. Don’t tell us who we are or could be, remind us of what we do at every minute of our life : dreaming.

We live in the XXIst century. Time to finally put Storytelling on the right shelf : close to philosophy, psychology, mysticism, physics and neuroscience. They are all aiming at the same discovery, they are all separate aspects of the way our minds can approach reality both from the inside and the outside.

Out of my mind ? Hopefully yes, when I write, when I see movies. Out of my mind means in the universe mind. And there is a clear way to find it : dreaming more, or not dreaming at all. Both are exactly the same.

The state of the actual world outside is not reality. It’s a nightmare. Yes, human race has created its own nightmare. We’re in, we all know.

But if you write, put some dream quality to this world. Dreaming is not an escape, an illusion. Dreaming is not for whimps. Dreaming is fight, individual courage, enlightment. Dreaming is the way to a better world.

And THAT is the purpose of stories.

Are you brave enough to dream awaken ? If so, you are a writer. May you pages blossom and find a way to us.

We desperately need them.

Now.

  1. Of course, according to Christopher Nolan, it’s actually a dream within a dream within a dream. And, the dream is collapsing.

You’re right Mike. Haven’t reached the third yet…but yes, for me each movie says something about stories, and Nolan’s Inception is definitely a metaphor of the audience entering a movie, suspension of disbelief and unconscious dark forces at work in any writer. And a great screenplay too !

Beautifully and in-spire-rational-ly put. I write first drafts in the mornings always after dreaming. If we were to rely solely on our conscious minds, writers would be throttled and impoverished at every turn.
